Raedia Lighting: patch, build looks, record cues, play the show.

Search or pick a chapter. The guide follows the screens of the desk in the order you use them.

Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play. Everything in the video is also written below.

1Welcome

  1. This is Raedia Lighting, the lighting desk that starts from your drawing.
  2. In this guide we bring in a drawing, patch the rig, build looks, record cues and play the show back, screen by screen.
  3. Every chapter is listed in the contents.

2Install, licence and the screens

  1. Install Raedia Lighting and start it.
  2. The chip at the top shows your licence and how many universes it unlocks.
  3. Click the chip to activate a key.
  4. Along the top are the screens: Show, Patch, Builder, Cues, Plan, Layout, Sheet, Programmer, Timeline and Views.
  5. Along the bottom, Record, Blind, Locate, Blackout, the maaster and Panic stay with you on every screen.
  6. Raedia Lighting runs once per computer, so starting it again just brings the window forward.

3Safe by default: universes Off

  1. In a new show every universe is set to Off, so nothing goes out to the network until you choose.
  2. Build the whole show in safety, then switch on the universes you need on the Patch screen.

4Bring in a drawing from Draftworks

  1. Start from the drawing.
  2. On the Plan screen, press Bring in a drawing and choose the MVR file you exported from Draftworks.
  3. Every light that names a fixture the library knows is patched, addressed and placed exactly where it hangs in the drawing.
  4. Anything the library doesn't know is listed as refused, with the reason, so nothing goes missing quietly.

5Patch and the fixture library

  1. On Patch every light is listed with its mode, universe and address.
  2. Identify flashes a light so you can find it in the rig.
  3. Change an address, or remove a light.
  4. The fixture library is on the right.
  5. It comes from the Open Fixture Library, with over 600 real fixtures.
  6. Search by manufacturer or fixture name, choose the mode, and add the light at the first free address, or at the address you type.

6Universes, sACN and Art-Net

  1. Down the middle are the universes.
  2. Set each one to sACN, Art-Net or Off, and see how many of its 512 channels are used.
  3. Your licence sets how many universes you can send.

7The Builder: make your own fixture

  1. If your fixture isn't in the library, make it.
  2. In the Builder, name the manufacturer and the fixture, add channels, say what each one does, and set the locate value.
  3. Save it to your library, or export it as a GDTF file to share.

8Select lights, groups and patterns

  1. Back on Show.
  2. Click lights on the left to select them, or type a selection like 1 thru 8 not 3.
  3. Make a group and name it, so one click brings the whole lot back.
  4. The selection tools work on whatever you have picked: odd, even, first half, second half, outer pair, reverse, shuffle, every third, or blocks of your own size.
  5. Next and Previous step through the selection one light at a time, and Highlight shows you which light is which in the rig.

9Intensity, fan and palettes

  1. The Dimmer tab sets intensity.
  2. Full, half or out, or drag the slider.
  3. Fan spreads a range of levels across the pick order, or out from the centre.
  4. Store a look as a palette and bring it back with one tap.

10Colour

  1. The Colour tab gives you quick colours, or pick any colour you like.
  2. Lights without full colour mixing take the nearest match and tell you so.

11Position, beam and the Attribute Editor

  1. Position sets pan and tilt for the moving lights.
  2. Beam covers zoom, focus, gobos and the rest.
  3. The Attribute Editor shows every channel of the selected lights in one place, so nothing is out of reach.

12Effects

  1. Now the effects.
  2. Circle, figure eight, rainbow, chase, pulse, colour chase, zoom breathe and strobe.
  3. Pick one, set the speed, the size and the spread, and it runs across the whole selection, following the order you picked the lights in.

13Masters: speed, size and warmth

  1. On the right, the speed and size masters scale every running effect together.
  2. Tap twice to set the speed from your own beat.
  3. Warmth makes the whole rig a little cooler or warmer without touching your cues.

14Plan: see and aim your rig

  1. On the Plan, each light shows the colour it is making.
  2. Pick some moving lights, click the floor, and they aim there.
  3. A red ring means a light can't reach.

15Stage 3D and Views

  1. Views opens the rig in Stage 3D, with a lit floor and beams, so you can see the look before the lights are even plugged in.

16Record cues

  1. When it looks right, press Record.
  2. Choose what to store: intensity, position, colour, beam and effects.
  3. Record onto the first free fader, or tick This cue only.
  4. Each Record adds a cue, and a message tells you exactly which cue list and cue it went to.

17Cue lists, playbacks and faders

  1. The Cues screen lists them.
  2. Go plays the next cue, and cues track, so a cue only changes what you recorded in it.
  3. Each cue list lives on a playback with its own fader, so you can ride the level by hand.

18Update, Clear and programmer time

  1. Update changes the cue you're on.
  2. Clear empties the programmer, ready for the next look.
  3. Programmer time sets a fade and a delay for live changes, so even your busking looks smooth.

19Layout: sweep the rig as a grid

  1. Layout is a grid.
  2. Drag your lights onto it and save it, and effects and fans follow the grid, row first, then columns.

20Sheet: the numbers

  1. Sheet is the numbers.
  2. Every fixture with its address, footprint, level and colour.
  3. Filter it, sort it, and select straight from it.

21The command line

  1. Prefer the keyboard?
  2. The command line takes words.
  3. 1 thru 4 at full colour blue record.
  4. Press Run and it does exactly what the buttons do.

22Macros, Timeline and keys

  1. Macros run a list of commands with one press.
  2. The Timeline shows the clock and the history of what you've done.
  3. And the Keys button lists every keyboard shortcut.

23Blind, Locate, Blackout and Panic

  1. Blind lets you build a look in the dark while the stage keeps running.
  2. Locate brings the selected lights home at full, so you can find them.
  3. Blackout takes everything out, and Release brings it back.
  4. And Panic is always one press away.

24Undo, Save, Venue and Lock

  1. Undo and Redo step back and forward through your changes.
  2. Save keeps the whole show, the rig, the looks and the cues, in one file.
  3. Venue holds the settings for the room you're in, and Lock stops stray fingers changing the show.

25Raedia Lighting in the Raedia Suite

  1. Raedia Lighting sits between the other two.
  2. Draftworks draws the rig and hands it over, patched and placed.
  3. Raedia, the video program, can send OSC straight to a Raedia Lighting fader, so the visuals and the light move together.
  4. Each program is sold separately, or at a reduced price in the Raedia Suite.

26Wrap up

  1. That's Raedia Lighting.
  2. Light the show.
  3. Find it at raedialighting.com.
